ASCM San Diego Chapter is looking for advocates for effective climate action and a more sustainable world to participate in the launch of our Eco-Sustainability group. We want your input to kick off an exciting new ongoing initiative in San Diego Chapter with those interested in moving Climate Action in Supply Chain forward. The virtual meeting will use breakout rooms with a facilitator in each room to lead the discussion on a particular sustainability topic.

We are organizing an initiative that supplements the body of knowledge used by supply chain professionals today.  The focus will be on eco-sustainability across the supply chain.  We live in challenging times.  Significant change is rapidly approaching.   The year 2030 is a critical milestone date.

Below are the reasons why you should participate in these discussion groups:

Why?  Because carbon emissions and water consumption will have to be reduced by 50% to control global temperature rise.

Why?  Our federal government has made this commitment to the rest of the world.  Yes, it’s that climate change thing again.  There are many challenges ahead to meet that goal.

Why?  Much of the existing infrastructure, items we use, products we produce, and performance metrics we use will need to be enhanced. Supply chain management is the profession about to be thrown into the front line of the battle against climate change.

Why?  The Global 500 have made progress on reducing carbon emissions within their corporate operating or legal boundaries.  The methodology used by the Global 500 to inventory and subsequently plan the reduction in carbon emissions is the GHG Protocol, Scope’s 1 and 2.  There is an increasing focus on the supply chain (Scope 3).

Why?  Supply chain inputs contribute eighty percent of the total carbon emissions in a final product. While this increased focus will create challenges, it's also a possible career enhancement opportunity.

Why?  Efforts to combat climate change have resulted in many non-profit specialist organizations and methodologies.  This eco-system is complex and being aware of each participant’s specialization and on the methodology side, their capabilities are essential.  Also, many corporations have created a specific role for individuals knowledgeable on eco-sustainability.  Empirical evidence suggests that the demand for these individuals exceeds the supply.

2022 is when we start “connecting all the dots” with monthly webinars, in-person meetings, and workshops focused on eco-sustainability.
