What is the (Greenhouse Gas) GHG Protocol?

The global standard for companies and organizations to measure and manage their GHG emissions and become more efficient, resilient, and prosperous.

This presentation provides an overview of corporate GHG accounting focusing on the direct GHG emissions attributable to an individual enterprise’s operations and GHG emissions related to purchased energy from suppliers.  Within the protocol, these are referred to as Scope 1 and Scope 2 respectively.  The logic of corporate accounting will be discussed along with its conventions, reporting GHG information to voluntary programs, common terminology, and additional educational sources.

The Change Agents

The Global 500 has historically led the way in innovations, applying new technologies that deal with economic and social disruptions.  It has functioned as an R&D lab and incubator and developed the “how-to” to solve these problems.  Now it is focused on a serious environmental issue, global warming.  Excessive GHG emissions are the root cause.

The Challenge

Most advanced industrial nations have committed to reducing GHG emissions by approximately fifty percent by 2030!

On The Horizon

Fortunately, a protocol for inventorying GHG emissions and creating plans to reduce them has been developed and time-tested over a two-decade period.  That methodology is the GHG Protocol.  The Global 500 has mastered the protocol and encourages its supply chain participants to adopt it.  Many believe the encouragement phase will soon transition into a requirement.
